ARTIST STATMENT
My work is figurative and mostly allegorical of the current political climate surrounding the “Border Wall” controversy and immigration from the Mexican and U.S. border.
I organize my work by creating satirical and tragic dialogue between the border figures and victims. Utilizing satire catches the viewer off guard, I want a sense of surprise when the viewer realizes exactly what is happening in my work.
However, I am not just interested in documenting these tragic events, I also present the viewpoint from the border agent. I show their regret and how they would rationalize the killing. It is important to show the injustice of cross border killings and the other tragic events that happen on our border, but I also want the audience to empathize with both sides. To try to understand why these events happen. My work will continue to move more towards a more psychological and emotional position.
I am excited about this work. I have created an interesting language between the abstract border agent characters against the more realistically drawn victims in a way that relates to the content of the work. My vision for this new series of prints is to make people aware of the killings, for the audience to see them as individuals and not just statistics. And also, to ask what the consequences of these killings and the aftermath that affects both sides.
